Tom Bowen's 100th Birthday

 Thomas Bowen – 100th Birthday
Thomas Bowen, who devised the technique we today call the 'Bowen Technique', would have been 100 on 18th April 2016.

It was only after his death that the term 'Bowen Therapy' came into existence. Tom simply described his work as 'soft tissue work' and generally did not teach his unique technique to others. Fortunately however, he did allow six people to watch him at work over an extended period. If it were not for these six, the technique would have been lost to the world following Tom's death in 1982 (aged 66).

The technique was first taught as a stand alone modality in 1988 and in less than 30 years, the success of the treatment has allowed the technique to spread rapidly over six continents, with thousands of practitioners now trained directly or indirectly via the six people. Their knowledge of the technique being cascaded down through Professional Associations maintains the purity of the technique and the professional standards.

I am sure that in another 30 years time, the 'Bowen Technique' will become a household term with everyone having either experienced it or at least knowing someone who has.

Basically the reason for the rapid spread throughout the world is its success rate and the fact that it is so simple to both administer and receive. No forceful manipulation is involved, just gentle rolling moves over specific muscles and tendons. Also being so gentle, it is suitable for all ages, especially as the technique can be administered through light, loose-fitting clothes.

The only thing that prevents the technique from being even more popular, is that it is hard for people to appreciate that a technique so gentle can have such a profound effect on encouraging the body to recommence its own healing process. It really has to be experienced to be

fully appreciated.

The Bowen Technique is recognised by the Complementary National Health Care Council (CNHC)

 1 day Homoeopathy course

6/22/2016

Feb 2016 Attended a 1 day Homoeopathy course.
It is important to appreciate the significant difference between Acute and Chronic conditions.
Chronic conditions are defined as symptoms that occur for a period lasting longer than 3 months. In dealing with Chronic conditions, homoeopathy requires a detailed appraisal of the client in order to decide upon the appropriate treatment course for each individual. However this Course focused on short term 'Acute Pain' issues – discussing natural products that can alleviate such symptoms.

t is worth noting that in my Bowen clinic, the vast majority of clients report Chronic conditions (over 3 months duration) and I too undertake a comprehensive assessment to fully appreciate their condition(s). This allows me to determine the amount of Bowen Work to apply. There is a saying in Bowen “Less is more” Bowen is a holistic technique treating the whole body, not just the apparent source of the pain and determining the amount of procedures to apply is key to the success of the treatment.

Speedwell Trust Lecture 3rd May 2015 Prof Susan Jebb

6/13/2015

Dr Susan Jebb OBE - Professor of Diet and Population Health

As one of the chairs of NICE Advisory panels she works with industry to obtain voluntary agreements to improve the nations health. Her talk, following just 1 day after her appearance on Radio 4, was entitled Knowledge, Nudge and Nanny – opportunities to improve the Nations Health.

Salient Points of Lecture
  • No 1 attributable cause of poor health in Britain is DIET

  • Implementing dietary recommendation could save 33,000lives/year

  • High fat/high sugar Items

5 worst intake items are: Confectionery, Cakes &biscuits, sugary drinks, low fibre bread, crisps

5 least intake items Fresh fruit, raw/boiled vegetables, High fibre breakfast cereals, High fibre bread
  • Sustainability of NHS is dependant on rapid upgrade in prevention and public health

  • Education is necessary but not sufficient. The influence of environmental factors plays a significant role in nations health

  • Knowlege – Nudge – Nanny I.e. 7 Choice step plan - Do Nothing, Provide information, Enable Choice, Guide choice by changing default policy, Guide choices through incentives, guide choices through disincentives, Restrict Choice.

  • Weight loss – the most cost effective means is via weight watcher groups – (more effective than State nurses) Loosing just a few pounds makes a significant difference to diabetes

  • On individual level – need to encourage and enable people to develop practical coping strategies to withstand obesogenic environment.

  • At Population Level – Change the environment to make the healthier choices, the easier choices.

  • Public health approach to changing diet_

Places – Create a healthier environment – e.g School meals, enviroment

People – Make healthier choices easier - e.g food labelling

Products – Providing healthier products e.g. reformulation – less salt/sugar and smaller portions

Promotions – marketing restrictions

What could Possibly be done?

  • Ban fast food outlets near schools?

  • Require healthier food options in takeaways

  • Provide Food standards for schools, hospitals, prisons.

  • Provide incentives for employers to provide healthier food in workplaces

  • Support Health Professions in advocating dietary change and provide support for patients

  • Provide consistent messages for consumers

  • May be necessary to impose additional taxes of items bad for health I.e. sugary drinks – mexico successfully adopted such a strategy

Summary

Population-level measures to promote a healthier diet are an essential complement to individual lifestyle interventions Education is useful, but rarely sufficient and not always necessary

Action from industry is crucial to transform the food environment

There is a subtle balance of power between policymakers, industry and the public which needs to be understood and managed if effective policies are to be successfully adopted.

Speedwell Trust Lecture -  "Neurodevelopment Disorders"

2/6/2015

PictureProfessor John Stein
On Wed 27 Jan 15.at Green Templeton College, Oxford.

On Wed 27 January,
Professor John Stein MA MSc. BM BCh FRCP  Emeritus Professor of Physiology at Magdalen College, Oxford pr

Professor Stein gave an informative lecture on the role of magnocellular neurons and their role in relation to disorders such as ADHD, Dyslexia,  Autism and Migraines.

His
research focuses on how vision controls movement in animals, patients with movement disorders, dyslexic children and antisocial offenders.    He collaborates with neurosurgeon, Prof Tipu Aziz, on deep brain stimulation for movement disorders and pain, with Dr Sue Fowler on visual dyslexia, and with the Institute of Food, Brain & Behaviour on the influence of nutrition on behaviour.

The messages that came across was that:

·         all the above mentioned disorders have a common thread in that they relate to dis-function of the magnocellular neurons.

·         There is an overlap between the Conditions i.e. some people will suffer from Dyslexia/Dyspraxia, or Dyspraxia/ADHD  etc.

·         There is an increase in the numbers related to ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia – Partly due to the better diagnosis of these conditions, but partly by the change in diet of the population.

·         Other factors that are believed to influence the occurrence of such dis-orders are: Over Eating, Poor intake of Micronutrients and Lack of exercise and most important is the Environment.

·         The importance of Having the correct Omega 3 /Omega 6 ratio was emphasised.

·         If there is a an omega 3 defeciency then people can be highly sensitive to motion.

·         Omega 3 can be best achieved by consuming oily fish (e.g. Mackeral, herring, sardines etc.) Alternatively fish supplements.

·         Basically certain types of oils like rapeseed oil and vegetable oils were not personnaly recommended.

·         Certain disorders seem to benefit from wearing tinted glasses – either yellow or blue

·         Migraines – The professor had researched the benefits of wearing deep blue tinted glasses – for a few hours every morning

·         The issue of magnocellular dis-function cost the USA around $400 billion dollars a year-a lot of which could be addressed comparatively simply by improved diet and exercise.

Fish is an important issue for both Professor Stein and his brother - celebrity chef  Rick Stein, who specialises in culinary  fish delights.

Fish is such an exciting ingredient and it does you so much good.  – itys just a shame from a health perspective that young people in particular now consumme so little fish (75% of all young people don’t eat fish at all.)

Migraines - and Bowen Therapy

1/26/2015

Picture
Migraines - Bowen Therapy can be used to address this condition.  Migraines – with its severe headaches, flashing lights, lack of balance and feeling of  nausea  are something that I personally experienced when I was 14-15. Fortunately in my case, the condition subsided after a couple of years and has not returned, however, for many people migraines are something they to contend with on a regular basis.

The Bowen Technique has been shown, in many cases, to help reduce the intensity and/or frequency of such  migraine attacks – see the following link to a study of   39 migraine sufferers of which 79% reported a beneficial effect.  More Comprehensive details of the test can be found on the Bowen Migrains study report at:- http://www.bowenmigraineresearch.co.uk/

There are a couple of migraine support sites –
http://www.migrainetrust.org/
http://www.migraine.org.uk/

I  have also compiled a word document of articles appearing In ‘Natural Health’ and other  complementary publications – I would be happy to forward a copy to anyone interested in the subject.

Speedwell Trust Lecture 3/12/14

12/17/2014

Glen Gibson,  Professor of Food Microbiology, and Head of Food Microbial Sciences at Reading University  presented a lecture “Bugs in Your Gut : What are they doing there and why am I trying to find out", to the Speedwell Trust on 3rd Dec, at the Green Temple College, Oxford.

Having describe the journey of our food through its various stages of digestion;  stomach, small and then large intestine, he went on to describe the enormous quantity of bacteria that our large intestines produce and its importance in keeping us all healthy. The importance of maintaining this gut flora was highlighted.  Antibiotics, although necessary to fight some infections, tend to cause damage to our natural protecting bacteria.  Hence the importance of consuming probiotics simultaneously with the antibiotics has been known for some while with some  countries issuing prescriptions for probiotics alongside antibiotics.-for simultaneous consumption

The Professor recommended consuming pre and probiotics on a daily basis-as a means for maintaining overall wellness.

Prebiotics can be obtained from  consuming root vegetable, leeks, artichokes, asparagus,  leeks etc.

Unfortunately, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA ) is yet to release  any guidance on the use of probiotics, despite numerous submissions from manufacturers.  The Professor considered this has led  to a degree of confusion for the general public, in determining the most appropriate probiotic to take.  Europe seemed to be lacking behind the world with such published advice.

The professor reported that  research tended to  indicate there may be a link between antibiotics, particularly large doses, and autism in children.

I certaintly came away convinced of the importance of pre and probiotics and I for one, will be consuming probiotics on a more regular basis from now on.
